When Protection Becomes a Cage
How do you know when self-protection is still keeping you safe… and when it’s quietly become a cage around your heart?
It’s not always obvious. In fact, most of the time it looks like “normal life.”
You’re getting things done.
You’re showing up.
You’re handling responsibilities.
You’re being strong.
But underneath all of that, there can be a quiet feeling of tightness. A sense that you’re holding yourself in. That you’re managing life more than you’re actually living it.
Lately, a gentle theme has been showing up in sessions again and again — very different people, very different situations, but the same deeper layer:
Something that once helped us survive is now ready to soften so we can expand.
The Protections That Once Helped Us
At some point in our lives, we all learned how to protect our hearts.
Maybe we became extra independent.
Maybe we stayed busy all the time.
Maybe we leaned heavily on logic and control.
Maybe we kept our feelings tucked away so we could keep functioning.
For me, I learned how to become invisible. Blending in felt safer than being seen. Staying small felt more manageable than taking up space.
None of these strategies are wrong. They were wise at the time. They helped us get through moments when we didn’t have the support, tools, or safety to stay open.
But growth has seasons.
And sometimes the very protection that once held us together is the thing now holding us back.
A wall that once kept pain out can also keep love, joy, and connection from fully coming in. A cage built for safety can start to feel like pressure on the inside.
The Shift from Head-Led to Heart-Led Living
We live in a world that rewards living from the mind — planning, achieving, pushing through, checking all the boxes.
The mind is amazing at organizing life. But the heart is where we actually experience life.
When we begin moving into a more heart-forward way of living, we start noticing things we may have ignored before:
Where we’re overextending.
Where we’re protecting instead of connecting.
Where we’re “fine” on the outside but quietly tired on the inside.
That awareness isn’t a sign that you’re doing something wrong. It’s a sign that your system is ready for a new level of safety — one where you don’t have to hold everything so tightly.
For me, that’s meant realizing that being invisible isn’t the path forward anymore. I’m learning that in this season of my life, it’s important to step forward. It’s important to practice speaking. It’s important to place myself in spaces where I can be seen and heard.
That’s part of why I’m sharing more, writing these blogs, and allowing myself to become more visible — especially when it comes to speaking and teaching about Reiki and energy work.
How Reiki and Energy Work Support This
This is one of the beautiful ways Reiki supports us.
Energy work doesn’t force the walls down. It doesn’t rip open the heart. It simply helps the body and nervous system feel safe enough to soften.
And when we soften, even a little, we create room for:
• Old emotional tension to release
• Protective patterns to update
• The heart to open in a way that feels manageable, not overwhelming
Often the shift is subtle. You feel a little lighter. You breathe a little deeper. You react a little less. You feel a little more like yourself.
That’s the beginning of moving from constant protection… into gentle expansion.
Making Space for Who You’re Becoming
Many people are in a season of growth right now. The version of you that got you through the past may not be the same version that carries you into what’s next.
Reiki sessions offer a supportive space to explore that transition — to notice what you’re still holding, why you learned to hold it, and whether it might be time to let something soften.
Not because you’ve failed.
But because you’re ready for more room in your own life.
If you’ve been feeling a quiet nudge that it’s time for more ease, more connection, or more heart in the way you’re living, energy work can be a gentle and powerful place to begin.
Sometimes growth isn’t about adding something new.
Sometimes it’s about finally feeling safe enough to set something down.
